POEM:
His sheath is too big for his blades and he knows
he may as well drive a giant lifted truck down
the highway, windshield flanked by towering silver
exhaust pipes special made to turn air black.
Smoke should pour from him.

Instead he disappoints young men. Tries
to tell them two blades are better
than one, size doesn’t matter.

They pull him open. He only resists
a little and soon they carve crisscrossed
stars and initialed hearts into
fake wood tables. It snows sawdust so
maybe they’re god; a small one that controls
local weather patterns.

He tries to stay sharp so he can cut off frog legs
or peel carrots. He whispers promises
into the whetstone: to kill, cleave, or wait

at the bottom of a purse by the foundation,
the powder kind. Some shook and settled in
his creases and now his joints tweak
when rainstorms near.
